Things I Think About When Reading Old School Star Trek Books

  1. If  outer space doesn’t look like these 1970’s painted covers, I’m not sure I’m interested in going.
  2. I like the idea of being a “friend of Star Trek” even more than being a fan.
  3. Being a Trekkie in the 70s WAS like being in a fun, friendly cult.
  4. Without all the Kool-Aid and going clear.
  5. I was always a Trekkie, not a Trekker, much to the dismay of my Trekker friends.3382821
  6. It felt like Trekkies were so enthusiastic and hopeful in the mid-70s.
  7.  Are we still? I can’t tell from the Interwebs.
  8. Many, MANY afternoons were spent after school next to my bedroom window, huddled over the heater vent eating brown sugar cinnamon Pop-Tarts, and reading The Making of Star Trek, the Concordance or the James Blish episode novelizations.
  9. I miss the old Foto-novels.
  10. Especially the ones with Shirtless Kirk®.
  11. Nichelle Nichols wrote a story in this anthology. Lieutenant Uhura! It’s like it happened for real because SHE WAS THERE ON THE ENTERPRISE!
  12. Until I moved to Hollywood, I didn’t connect the dots that human beings just like me actually WROTE these things. I am a little slow sometimes.
  13. I never wrote any Trek fan fiction, but I did write fan scripts. (I killed Dr. Crusher in one! Sorry, Gates McFadden!)
  14. On the other hand, my Doctor Who Fifth Doctor fiction with Tegan, Nyssa and Adric started awesome and then got Mary Sue within two pages.
  15. I’ve seen Nichelle Nichols several times, but was too shy to speak to her.
  16. I will never be shy again! Go boldly!
